Maine hosts UVM with streak on line

For the first time in his three seasons behind the bench, University of Maine women’s hockey coach Dan Lichterman finds himself riding a four-game unbeaten streak. The previous high was two.

Maine will try to extend that Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m. when it hosts Hockey East rival Vermont.

Maine began its streak with a 1-0 win at Northeastern and has followed that with a 1-1 tie against Boston University in Lewiston and 5-5 and 3-3 overtime road ties at North Dakota.

“We’ve played pretty well since the beginning of November,” said Lichterman.

Maine broke out of a scoring drought last weekend after being held to 13 goals in its previous 13 games.

“The puck finally started going in,” said Lichterman. “It’s not like we did anything different. We got a couple of bounces and the players realized it takes second and third shots to score [sometimes]. Our games aren’t on TV so ugly goals look just as nice as any other goal.”

The line of Jenna Ouellette (2 goals, 2 assists) between Taryn Peacock (1 & 2) and Dawn Sullivan (1 & 1) teamed up for four goals and five assists in an impressive performance against the Fighting Sioux. Defenseman Lexie Hoffmeyer had four assists and left wing Jennie Gallo had 1 & 2.

He also praised the energy provided by the line of Dominique Goutsis between Amy Stech and Hockey East Rookie of the Week Brittany Dougherty.

Another key in the streak has been freshman goalie Brittany Ott. She has posted a 1-0-2 record, a 1.26 goals-against average and a .958 save percentage.

Lichterman said they are treating Hockey East regular-season games like “playoff games because our goal is to make the playoffs. We have to show up to play [hard] every night.”

The top six teams make the playoffs and Maine is currently sixth, one point ahead of Connecticut and three ahead of Vermont. Both have played two fewer league games than Maine.
