BELFAST, Maine — St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church is starting a weekly Saturday evening contemporary service with storytelling and Holy Communion followed by a simple supper. People of all ages are welcome.

For nine months the congregation and search committee prayed about “doing a new thing.” Now that the Rev. Martha Kirkpatrick has had a chance to settle into parish ministry at St. Margaret’s, the time is ripe to start a new service open to all ages.

“I’m very excited about what we are doing here,” said Kirkpatrick. “There are people in our community for whom Sunday morning services don’t work for a variety of reasons. It is my hope that people will feel this is a safe space to explore their spirituality, to learn, and to meet new people. I’m also hoping the service will evolve over time, as the people who come help shape it.”

A “come-as-you-are” event, the 5 p.m. service will have Scripture reading, storytelling, shared reflection for all who want to speak, singing and shared music-making, followed by the Eucharist.

Services in December will explore Advent themes: the Annunciation to Mary, Dec. 5; John the Baptist and preparation, Dec. 12; and the birth of Jesus, Dec. 19. The service will be held in St. Margaret’s sanctuary, rearranged into a more informal worship space. All are invited to bring instruments. After the service a simple, children-friendly supper will be shared in the parish house.
