FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The state medical examiner’s office has released the names of three people killed in a fiery crash on Nov. 13.

Sgt. Shawn Newell of the Fort Fairfield Police Department said Tuesday that the victims of the North Caribou Road crash were James Alley Jr., 35, Ronald McEachern, 39, and Heidi Boulier, 36, all from Fort Fairfield.

The horrific crash claimed the lives of Alley, McEachern and Boulier when the Ford pickup truck they were riding in collided head-on with a pulp truck and caught fire.

Police said that Alley, who was at the wheel of the truck, veered into the oncoming lane and hit the log truck being operated by Scott Sherman of Masardis.

Both vehicles caught fire.

All three victims, who were burned beyond recognition, were killed instantly. Sherman was treated for minor injuries.

At first, investigators believed two of the victims were children but later realized all three were adults.

Blood and tissue samples from the victims were sent to the medical examiner’s office in Augusta. Newell said that DNA samples from the victims were compared with oral DNA samples from their blood relatives.

The positive matches then were confirmed.

“We were confident we knew who the victims were but had to wait for positive identification from the chief medical examiner’s office before releasing the names of the deceased,” Newell said Tuesday.

Police are not yet sure why Alley’s vehicle veered into the oncoming lane, he said.

The accident remains under investigation.
