PITTSFIELD, Maine — The Town Council on Tuesday will consider a request to increase a contract for the expansion and renovation of Pittsfield Public Library by more than $10,000. That addition would bring the total amount of the contract with Nichols Construction LLC of Hudson to $926,929.
The project, which is scheduled for completion in December, has been under way for months. Along with a substantial addition to the back of the building, the original library is undergoing a renovation.
The changes being proposed are the result of items that were not anticipated when the original contract was signed, as well as other changes, according to documents provided to town councilors.
The additional expenses include a steel rack system for the new building’s two boilers, the relocation of electrical panels and refinishing shelving among other items that total $10,213.
Another $5,200 in changes were rejected. Some $14,926 worth of additional items are under consideration. The largest of those is a leveling of the floor in the lower level, which would cost more than $10,000. The town is researching alternative methods, according to a summary of the change package provided to town councilors.
The library is functioning out of a temporary location within the Maine Central Institute library until the construction is complete.
In other business, the council is scheduled to conduct its yearly evaluation of Town Manager Kathryn Ruth in executive session, followed by a workshop on the 2010 budget. The council’s budget deliberations will address the airport, recreation, library, theater and community service agencies.
Tuesday’s meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in Town Council Chambers.
