SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine — Authorities are still trying to notify next of kin about the death of a local woman whose body washed up on shore in Manset, according to police.

Officer Allen Smith of the Southwest Harbor Police Department said Friday that the woman’s death is still being investigated. Police have identified the body but are not releasing the woman’s name while they try to contact her family, he said.

The 56-year-old woman has no known relatives in the area, Smith said.

A resident walking along the beach found the body along the shore between Seawall and the Manset town dock around 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to Allen. Two days earlier, a kayak was found along the same section of shore, he said.

He said the woman’s death is not believed to be suspicious.

“We believe it was kayaking,” he said of what she was doing at the time she died.

Officer Rick Graham is the lead officer in the investigation, Smith said.
