AUGUSTA, Maine — Safety officials say Maine’s highway death toll for the year remains below 2008, which was the safest year on the state’s roads since 1959.

According to the Bureau of Highway Safety, there have been 138 fatalities on Maine roads so far this year. That’s four fewer than this time last year.

This year’s traffic fatality count has been lower than 2008 for the most part, although the 2009 tally has spiked in the past week with 11 traffic deaths.
