Bar Harbor bed races Saturday after early sale

BAR HARBOR, Maine — For the second year in a row, the Chamber of Commerce will follow up its annual Early Bird Sale this morning with bed races on Cottage Street.

The races are scheduled to start soon after the sale, which is scheduled to take place from 6 to 9 a.m. Saturday. A parade of the competing beds will depart the Village Green at 10 a.m. and head down Main Street to Cottage Street, where the races will be held immediately afterward.

Last year, the first year the race was held, seven teams of five people each competed. Each team with its own custom-built bed featured four pushers and one rider, often dressed in flamboyant outfits.

Heather Jones, the Chamber’s events coordinator, said Friday that 12 teams have signed up for the time-trial races. Besides trophies, the fastest team will get $500 in gift cards and the second-place team $200 in gift cards. The team with the best-decorated bed will win gift certificates for a dinner at The Thirsty Whale tavern and a movie at the Criterion Theater.

The annual Early Bird Sale encourages shoppers to dress in pajamas, bathrobes and slippers in order to take advantage of discounts at participating businesses. For the 15th annual sale this year, the Mount Desert Island High School Music Boosters Club will wrap presents at the corner of Main and Cottage streets to raise money for the high school band’s trip to London to play in the 2011 New Year’s Day parade, Jones said.
