DONALD JOSEPH ‘PA’ STEWART SR.

JONESPORT – Donald Joseph “Pa” Stewart Sr., 76, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, with his loving family by his side at a Bangor health care facility. He was born June 17, 1933, in Concord, Mass., son of the late John William and Eliza Eva (Dumas) Stewart Sr. Donald attended school in Concord, Mass., and then enlisted at age 17 into the U.S. Navy, where he served his country honorably during the Korean War aboard the USS Wisconsin. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Navy he returned home to Jonesport, where he owned and operated Stewarts Grocery, a local service garage and grocery for many years. In the mid 1970s, the service garage relocated in town and the original Grocery and Service Garage became Stewarts Grocery, which he continued to own and operate for many years. During the course of his life, he was active in many town affairs, including his activity with the town fire department, where he was a former assistant fire chief for many years. He was also an active volunteer within Moosabec Ambulance Service, where he was one of the founding members and where he taught EMT and CPR classes to surrounding communities and organizations. He was also a town selectman for the town of Jonesport, a member of their budget committee and Fourth of July committee. He was a member of the Arnold Memorial Medical Building Society and was a member of Downeast Community Hospital Board of Cooperators. He was also a contributing member of the Michael G. Carver Foundation and a member of American Legion Post No. 108, Jonesport. Donald enjoyed attending Jonesport/Beals boys and girls basketball games, woodworking, camping and attending the Fryeburg Fair for more than 35 years. He shared 55 years of marriage with his wife, Maxine E. (Wright) Stewart of West Jonesport. In addition to his wife, family members include his children, Donald Joseph Stewart Jr., Elizabeth A. Stewart Alley and Kelly J. Stewart-Bishop; grandchildren, Donald Joseph “DJ” Stewart III and fianc?e, Hannah Derderian, Samantha Smith, Sabrina Merchant and husband, Darek, Anson Joseph “AJ” Alley and his wife, Leigh, Bronson Alley and fianc?e, Traci Christenson, Christopher Peaden, U.S. Coast Guard, Jordan Peaden and Darrin Peaden; and great-grand-children, Taylor, Aidan S., Aidan D., Joshua, Jocelyn, Nathan, Brenna and Kadence. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be sadly missed by a “special” brother, Buddy Kilton and his wife, Morita; and by a “special” sister-in-law, Laura Chipman and her husband, Ronald, and children; and also by a “special niece,” Brenda Mitchell and husband, Brad and their children. Donald will also be missed by many that he has formed relationships with throughout the years, including Dennis and Sharon Alley, Rosalie Carver, Ruth Kelley, Richard and Pat Carver, Dwight and Lynn Alley, and Doralies Bobryk and Sheba Merritt. He was predeceased by a brother, John William Stewart Jr.; and by a sister, Margaret Mary Mercer. He was also predeceased by close friends, Cal Carver, Cabby Kelley, Shirley Merritt and Wayne Barnes. A graveside service will be celebrated 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport, with Pastor George Woodward officiating. A celebration with a time of fellowship and refreshment will be after the burial at Stewarts Grocery, Jonesport. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Moosabec Ambulance, P.O.
