VINALHAVEN, Maine — Officials are set to throw the switch on a $14.5 million wind power project on the island of Vinalhaven.
On Tuesday the Fox Islands Wind project officially goes online with a ribbon cutting event that will mark the completion of Maine’s first island wind project.
The Portland Press Herald says it’s the largest community-owned wind project on the East Coast.
The hope is that the turbines will generate enough electricity for the 2,000 full-time residents, lower electric costs and enable the Fox Islands cooperative to sell some power back to the power grid.
Many islanders are thrilled with the project, but some are unhappy with the sight and sound of the three 250-foot turbines that rise above the island.
