BANGOR, Maine — Trustees for the seven-campus University of Maine System have approved a plan to cut costs and improve efficiency to avoid a nearly $43 million budget shortfall by 2013.

The trustees on Monday unanimously approved a slightly modified plan that was put forward by Chancellor Richard Pattenaude. The chancellor has said the university system must adopt a new business model based on reducing costs, increasing use of technology and more attention to setting priorities.

Monday’s vote authorizes Pattenaude to lead the public universities in implementing the plan. It calls for more three-year degrees and doubling the number of students in online programs.
