FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — A horrific crash claimed the lives of three people Friday afternoon when a pickup truck collided head-on with a pulp truck and caught fire.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said three adults were killed in the crash that took place just after noon Friday on North Caribou Road.

McCausland said the pickup carrying the three adults was in the wrong lane when it collided head-on with the larger truck.

The pickup immediately caught fire, he said. The three killed were burned beyond recognition.

At first, investigators believed two of the victims were children but later realized all three were adults.

The driver of the pulp truck was treated for minor injuries.

A team of troopers, including members of the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, went to the crash site to assist the Fort Fairfield Police Department with the investigation.

The names of those involved had not been released Friday evening.

McCausland said he believes the bodies of the victims will be taken to the state medical examiner’s office for autopsies.

The investigation of the crash is ongoing, he said.
