ROCKLAND, Maine — A Spruce Head woman was charged this week for making $13,000 in fake bottle deposits at the South End Grocery Store.

Faith Whitsit, 21, was a cashier at the store from April through the end of October 2009, according to Detective Sgt. Chris Young of the Rockland Police Department.

“She entered fake returns that never existed into the cash register,” Young said

When the store owners noticed the discrepancy, they called police. They investigated and issued Whitsit a summons on Tuesday.

“She was very apologetic,” Young said.

Theft of more than $10,000 is a Class B crime, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $20,000.

Young said he has seen similar cases, but that “this is at the high end.”
