Wetherbee leads Bapst past Lynx

BANGOR, Maine — Billy Wetherbee rushed for 89 yards on nine carries and scored three touchdowns as No. 2 John Bapst pulled away from No. 3 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln in an LTC Class C football semifinal 35-14 at Cameron Stadium Satuday.

John Bapst (9-1) will face No. 1 Foxcroft Academy (10-0) for the Eastern Maine Class C championship at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakes Field in Dover-Foxcroft.

Wetherbee returned the game’s opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown to give John Bapst a 6-0 lead, but a 61-yard run by MA’s Grady Markie tied the game before Wetherbee broke off a 39-yard scoring run to restore John Bapst to a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Mattanawcook, which ended its season at 7-3, took its only lead at 14-13 on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Ethan White to Derek Gardner 53 seconds into the second quarter.

John Bapst quarterback Shane Hass then passed 56 yards to Grady Hayes for a touchdown that gave the Crusaders a 21-14 halftime edge.

Wetherbee and Hass each added a TD run in the fourth quarter. Wetherbee scored from 16 yards out shortly after John Bapst recovered a Mattanawcook fumble, while Hass followed up with a 1-yard run to cap off the scoring,
