Preserved pond, river tracts link Moosehead to Baxter

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA — Gov. John Baldacci and conservationists announced key land acquisitions in northern and western Maine.

The Appalachian Mountain Club is acquiring the 29,500-acre Roach Ponds tract in the so-called 100-Mile Wilderness region. The purchase secures a “missing link” in what is now a 63-mile-long corridor of conservation land, comprising 600,000 acres stretching from Moosehead Lake to Baxter State Park.

In addition, The Nature Conservancy is acquiring 15,000 acres in the Moose River Reserve in western Maine, which is a popular destination for canoers and kayakers.

At a news conference Monday, Baldacci called the acquisitions “a landmark achievement.”
