GARLAND, Maine — An investigator with the State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the cause of a fire that destroyed a home Friday at 29 Dexter Road in Garland was caused by a wood stove.

Sgt. Timothy York of the fire marshal’s office said an investigation revealed that the fire was caused by combustibles that were too close to a wood stove in the kitchen of the home.

Joe and Christie Whitten and their three children, ages 7 to 13, lost almost everything they owned in Friday’s midday blaze, which started when no one was home.

Contributions to assist the family may be mailed to Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union, Attn: Whitten Family Fund, P.O. Box 233, Dexter 04930. Workers at the Garland Town Hall, as well as the Garland Store on Oliver Hill Road, also are accepting donations of cash and goods.
