WASHBURN, Maine — The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the origin of a fire Sunday that heavily damaged the former McCain processing plant on Main Street.

The town-owned building had been vacant for years and was in the process of being demolished, according to Washburn Fire Chief Troy Heald. He said it was definitely a suspicious fire and one that appeared to have different points of origin.

The fire was fully under way when firefighters arrived at about 6 p.m. so an internal attack could not be made, Heald said. Firefighters from Washburn, Presque Isle and Caribou were on the scene until 10:40 p.m. Heald said a few firefighters would remain there throughout the night to make sure there were no flare-ups.

Heald said the building was “pretty much gone.”
