Ives memorial service Saturday at UMaine

ORONO, Maine — A memorial celebration of Edward “Sandy” Ives, the longtime University of Maine professor who died in August at the age of 83, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the university’s Wells Conference Center.

A UM faculty member for 44 years, Ives founded the university’s Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History, now the Maine Folklife Center, in 1971.

Ives served as a folk arts panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, a fellow of the American Folklore Society and a member of the Maine Arts Commission. He was appointed to the Acadian Cultural Preservation Commission.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Ives’ name to the Maine Folklife Center, care of the University of Maine Foundation, Buchanan Alumni House, 2 Alumni Place, Orono 04469-5792, and New Hope Hospice, P.O. Box 757, Holden 04429.
