HOULTON, Maine — A 23-year-old Houlton man was arrested early Sunday and charged with aggravated assault after an incident involving a teenager he allegedly was engaged in a relationship with.
The 15-year-old victim, also a Houlton resident, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and sought treatment at a local hospital.
Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin said Monday afternoon that the incident happened just before 1 a.m. Sunday. Police were called to the scene after receiving a report of a female screaming near the Post Office on Court Street.
When police arrived, they found the victim bleeding substantially from her nose and mouth.
Police searched the scene and came upon Mathew C. Hathaway, a resident of 82 Main St., who was a short distance away by the Salvation Army building.
Asselin said Hathaway was holding a purse he said belonged to the victim.
When Officer Kris Calaman examined the contents, he found two used hypodermic needles, cigarettes, a cellular telephone and a small quantity of marijuana.
Asselin said Hathaway and the victim have been involved in a relationship.
Hathaway told police he believed the victim had taken money belonging to him, prompting the fight.
Asselin said the victim’s injuries were inflicted by the use of fists and feet. An imprint of Hathaway’s sneaker was located on the victim’s lip. Hathaway’s sneakers were seized as evidence.
Alcohol was involved, according to police.
Hathaway, who has a prior criminal history, was arrested and charged with violating conditions of release, felony aggravated assault, robbery, sexual abuse of a minor and possession of marijuana.
He was taken to the Aroostook County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court in January.
Calaman was assisted at the scene by Officer Anita Levesque.
The victim was treated at Houlton Regional Hospital. The investigation remains ongoing.
