USDA sends organic agriculture grants to Maine

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The U.S. Agriculture Department has announced more than $19 million in grants that have been awarded to universities to be applied toward organic agriculture research and education.

Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan annnounced the grants Friday while visiting the Borealis Breads bakery, in Portland, whose products include breads made from organic wheat grown in Maine.

In all, 23 schools are receiving grants.

Among the recipients are the University of Maine, which is getting a $1.3 million grant, and the University of Vermont and State Agriculture College, which is receiving $946,000.
