BROOKLIN, Maine — Five people were injured in a head-on accident on Route 15 in the heavy rain late Saturday afternoon.

According to a report from Deputy Ben Astbury of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Diana Dowse, 59, of Brooklin was headed south on Route 175 about a mile south of the High Street intersection at about 4:25 p.m.

Timothy Sawyer, 42, of Brooklin was headed south in a 2001 Chevy pickup when the vehicle started to hydroplane in the heavy rain. Sawyer lost control and overcorrected, and the pickup crossed the centerline and went into the path of Dowse’s 2001 Subaru. The two vehicles collided head-on.

Dowse was taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth. She remained in the hospital Monday evening. No information was available about her condition Monday.

Sawyer and three passengers in his vehicle, Caleb, Timothy and Ethan Sawyer, no ages listed, were taken to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to Astbury. No information on their conditions was available from the hospital Monday.

Damage to Sawyer’s pickup was estimated at $8,000 and to Dowse’s Subaru at $6,500. Both vehicles were considered total losses.
