ORONO, Maine — Orono resident Judy Kellogg Markowsky will be one of three women to receive a Maryann Hartman Award Wednesday evening during a ceremony at the University of Maine.

The Hartman Awards, in their 24th year, are named for the late Maryann Hartman, a UMaine associate professor of speech communication. The awards recognize Maine women whose achievements in the arts, politics, business, education, health care and community service provide inspiration for women.

The ceremony will be held 5-7:30 p.m. at the Buchanan Alumni House.

The awards are sponsored by the Women in the Curriculum and Women’s Studies Program at UM.

Markowsky is the recently retired founding director of the Fields Pond Audubon Center in Holden and an activist in local environmental issues. Her writing on nature appears in The Weekly of the Bangor Daily News.

The other Hartman Award winners are Layne Gregory of Falmouth and Fatuma Hussein of Lewiston.

Gregory is the executive director of Boys to Men, an organization she helped to create, and a part-time faculty member at the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work. The focus of Boys to Men is on helping boys find their own voices through healthy relationships with adult male role models.

Hussein is the founder and executive director of United Somali Women in Maine, which seeks to improve the quality of life for all refugees in the Lewiston-Auburn area. She is a member of the State Advisory Council on Multicultural Affairs.

Katelyn Jacques and Amy Yeung, who are juniors at Lewiston High School, will share the ninth Young Women’s Social Justice Award. Jacques and Yeung founded the organization Hearts for Adolescents, which aims to help the school’s homeless population.

The event is open to anyone who wants to attend. Admission is free although donations are accepted. Any funds raised go to Women in the Curriculum and the Women’s Studies Program.
