New teacher contract under consideration

By Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN Staff

BREWER, Maine — The Brewer Education Association and school department officials are considering a new teacher contract, which is an agenda item for a special Brewer School Committee meeting on Monday.

The school board meeting will begin with an executive session to discuss the labor contract. Once out of the closed-door meeting, the board will consider ratifying the proposed contract, according to the agenda for the special meeting. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Brewer High School.

Amy Reif, BEA president and third grade teacher at Washington Street School, said after school Friday that the two groups have been talking since February. Over the last few months the school board has held several closed-door meetings to discuss the issue.

“We reached a tentative agreement … and we’re presenting it to [BEA] members on Tuesday afternoon,” Reif said. “They’ll vote on it Wednesday afternoon.”

Details of the new contract will not be released until the contract is ratified by the teachers union and the school board. Teacher contracts for Brewer, which recently have been for three years, expired at the end of August.

“We’ve been working without a contract” since the beginning of the school year, Reif said.
