ATKINSON – Thomas Stephens Brown Sr. passed peacefully Oct 18, 2009, with loved ones at his side, at his home. He was born Nov. 22 1924, in Freehold, N.J., son of Ernest and Alberta Brown. He grew up hunting and trapping in New Jersey, and where he met the love of his life, Marie Smith. The two later married and honeymooned in Maine, where he told his beloved wife he would buy her a farmhouse for the two to live. In 1966, he did just that, he purchased a home in Atkinson. With his humble beginnings on an apple farm in New Jersey, he brought all the skills acquired to his new home that he renovated into a beautiful country house. He spent the majority of his life working as a carpenter and mason retiring in 2000. He loved his work and took pride in everything he did, and will be remembered as a fine cabinetmaker and craftsman. In his free time, he proudly served his community; a selectman for Atkinson, a building committee member for SAD 41, served for many years on the board of directors at Mayo Regional Hospital and was a founding member of Atkinson Volunteer Fire Department. He was predeceased by his wife, Marie. He is survived by his daughter, Lois and her husband, Donald Dow, of Atkinson; son, Thomas S. Brown Jr. and wife, Kathy Brown, of Dover-Foxcroft; grandchildren, Melissa Doane, Richard Dow, Thomas S. Brown III and Lindsay Brown; great-grandson, Richard Doane Jr.; and sisters, Alberta and Dorothy. A private memorial has been requested. Public burial will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
