Man killed in tractor trailer crash

YORK, Maine – State Police say a truck driver was killed this morning on the Maine Turnpike when his truck slammed into the rear of a second one, hauling steel beams.

The crash took place about 6:45 a.m. on the northbound lanes in York, as both vehicles were in the travel lane. Troopers said the driver was killed instantly in the crash. The driver of the tractor trailer said he felt the impact of the collision and pulled his big rig into the breakdown lane, with the second truck now attached to the rear of his trailer unit.

Both drivers are from New Hampshire and the name of the dead man is being withheld as relatives are notified.

The driver of the tractor trailer is 78 year old Donald Young of Hampton, N.H., who was not injured. The crash closed one of the three northbound lanes for much of the morning as the wrecks were removed from the scene. The tractor trailer is owned by Novel Iron Works of Greenland, N.H., and Young was delivering the cargo of steel beams to Portland, which the crash took place.
