BOWERBANK, Maine — A Bowerbank man who left his home Thursday to search for his dog and spent the night in the forest after becoming disoriented returned home safely Friday.

Search and rescue personnel had been looking for Alfred Thomas Hall III, 36, who left his home at noon Thursday because he thought his dog had left the property, according to Sgt. William Chandler of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

When the man’s mother returned home at 3:30 p.m., she figured her son had gone for a walk, but she thought it was unusual he left the dog behind, Chandler said Friday. The mother told wardens that her son typically walked the dog each day, he said.

“It’s not uncommon for him to be late, to not get home until late,” Chandler said. When Hall failed to arrive back home by 1:30 a.m. Friday, the mother called police. Before that, the family had initiated their own search by riding the roads in the area looking for him, he said.

Chandler said he was assisted in a ground search by Wardens Glenn Annis, Mike Morrison, Roger Guay and his trained search dog, Maine Search and Rescue canine teams, and Investigator Allen Emerson of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department. Warden pilot Charlie Later also searched first thing in the morning from the air.

As the search was under way, Hall returned home at about 7 a.m., according to Chandler.

“I believe he spent the night in a wooded area out behind his residence,” Chandler said. “He was cold, but he was in good shape. He said he kept moving all night. That way he kept warm.”

Chandler said Hall was the subject of a search about two years ago in Bradford.
