CANAAN, Maine — An Augusta man faces multiple charges after he went on a violent, drunken rampage Sunday night, according to Maine State Police Trooper Peter Michaud.

Gary Davis, 23, is charged with domestic violence assault, assault, domestic criminal mischief, criminal trespass and resisting arrest. He also had an arrest warrant in Kennebec County stemming from a traffic violation, said Michaud, the officer who handled the incident.

The fracas began at about 7:40 p.m. Sunday at Davis’ girlfriend’s home on Park Drive in Canaan, according to Michaud.

The 19-year-old girlfriend arrived home to find that Davis, who was drunk, had destroyed some of her computer equipment and punched a hole in a wall, which resulted in the criminal mischief charge, according to Michaud. When confronted, Davis grabbed the woman by the shirt and “pinned her down,” Michaud said. The woman asked him to leave several times, but Davis refused.

At one point, Davis went outside and she locked the door behind him. A friend of the victim confronted Davis as he was trying to force his way back into the home. Davis responded by punching the friend in the face, according to Michaud.

After his arrest, Davis smashed his head against a window and a computer stand in Michaud’s cruiser, which caused no damage to the vehicle.

Davis’ rage allegedly continued when he arrived at Somerset County Jail. “The jail guards used physical force in order to subdue him,” said Michaud, explaining the reason for the resisting arrest charge.

State Trooper Scott Stevens and Somerset County sheriff’s Deputy Don Avery assisted in the investigation.

Davis was still at Somerset County Jail in Skowhegan on Monday evening on $5,000 bail, according to corrections officer Shannon Pooler. Pooler said Davis’ file indicates that he has a history of domestic violence offenses.
