NEWRY, Maine — More than 30 competitors have signed up to take part in the 10th annual North American Wife Carrying Championships in western Maine.

Joe Decker, who has been called the “world’s fittest man,” is among those who will take part in Saturday’s race at the Sunday River resort in Newry.

For the race, couples navigate a 278-yard obstacle course that includes two log obstacles and a big water hole. The rules stipulate that either the man can carry the woman or vice versa.

The winning team gets the wife’s weight in beer and the wife’s weight times five in cash.

The event is part of Sunday River’s annual Fall Festival Weekend.
