Helicopter drops to runway in Maine, nobody hurt

The Associated Press

AUBURN, Maine — A pilot and his passenger walked away unhurt after their two-seat helicopter crashed Thursday at the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport.

Tim O’Leary of Gorham told the Sun Journal of Lewiston that he was hovering about 5 feet above the ground in the rented helicopter when he lost control in the wind. The helicopter then dropped suddenly to the ground at the end of the runway.

The helicopter was heavily damaged, but O’Leary and his passenger were unhurt.

O’Leary said he used to fly helicopters for the Army, and was going on a sight-seeing flight with a friend when the accident occurred.
