ROCKLAND, Maine — An inmate at the Knox County Jail tried to hang himself Monday but was rescued by a correction officer, according to Chief Deputy Ernie McIntosh of the Knox County Sheriff’s Department.

The man was taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center Monday and then taken by LifeFlight helicopter later that day to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, according to the sheriff’s department.

As of Wednesday evening, there was no update on the inmate’s medical status or his identity.

“There’s a lot of confidentially issues around this,” McIntosh said.

No further information was available late Wednesday.
