BUCKSPORT, Maine — A local home is considered a total loss but no one was injured after a fire consumed a house Wednesday morning off Millvale Road, according to a local official.

No one was home at the Coleman Lane residence of Bertha and Daniel Coleman when the fire was reported just before 7 a.m. Wednesday, according to Bucksport Fire Chief Craig Bowden. He said a motorist driving past the house saw flames shooting out of the home and called the fire department.

“It was not occupied at the time,” Bowden said. “The people who live there were still at camp.”

Bowden said local firefighters who live in the neighborhood were able to get to the scene within a few minutes but that an ell on the home was already starting to collapse from the blaze when they arrived. The house quickly was engulfed in the fire, he said.

“It is a total loss. The main structure is still standing, but it’s completely gutted out,” Bowden said.

There were no injuries from the fire, the chief said. The home was insured.

Bowden said that, with all the damage, chances are slim that investigators will be able to determine how the fire started. Nonetheless, officers with the State Fire Marshal’s Office were at the scene Wednesday looking into possible causes, he said.
