Several of the wealthy and powerful people who have summered on Mount Desert Island in recent decades have since died. Among them are:

Philanthropist and socialite Brooke Astor

Author and chef Julia Child

Former W.R. Grace & Co. CEO J. Peter Grace Jr.

Former Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller

Former Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger.

Many of their heirs continue to own homes and other properties on MDI.

Philanthropist Katherine W. Davis, the 102-year-old widow of Shelby Cullom Davis, a former Wall Street investment banker and U.S. ambassador to Switzerland.
