Influential people who have places on Mount Desert Island


Several of the wealthy and powerful people who have summered on Mount Desert Island in recent decades have since died. Among them are:

Philanthropist and socialite Brooke Astor

Author and chef Julia Child

Former W.R. Grace & Co. CEO J. Peter Grace Jr.

Former Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller

Former Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger.

Many of their heirs continue to own homes and other properties on MDI.

Stephen J. Hadley, former national security adviser to President George W. Bush.

Hollywood film actors Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins

NBA basketball coach Gregg Popovich, whose home overlooks MDI from Hancock Point.

Bangor native Thomas Walsh, whose family owns and operates Ocean Properties Ltd., one of the largest privately held hospitality resort firms in the country.

New York-based investment portfolio manager Hans P. Utsch.

Philanthropist Katherine W. Davis, the 102-year-old widow of Shelby Cullom Davis, a former Wall Street investment banker and U.S. ambassador to Switzerland.
