BANGOR, Maine — “The Way We Get By” has had premieres and strong showings in New York, Los Angeles and even here in Bangor. This week, the award-winning documentary film about three Bangor International Airport troop greeters will be screened in front of several special guests in the nation’s capital.

A group including Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, and Maine’s congressional delegation will be on hand Wednesday evening to show “The Way We Get By” to a group of military members and volunteers at the Capitol Visitors Center at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

On Thursday, the movie will be screened at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington for service members, their families and Walter Reed employees.

The showing at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday is being sponsored by Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, and Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree, who all are expected to be in attendance. Jill Biden is scheduled to give introductory remarks.

Maj. Gen. John Libby, the head of the Maine Air National Guard, is also scheduled to attend, and members of Congress have been invited to the showing.

“The Way We Get By” premiered in Washington in May at the GI Film Festival.

Michaud is planning to speak about the film on the House floor around 10 a.m. today. In his planned remarks, Michaud will tell House members that the film “features dedicated and patriotic Mainers who make sure that no soldier passes through Bangor, Maine, without receiving a handshake and a heartfelt thank-you.”

“The Way We Get By” features local residents Joan Gaudet, Bill Knight and Jerry Mundy and was directed by Old Town native Aron Gaudet. All three subjects, along with director and producer Gita Pullapilly, will participate in question-and-answer sessions after the movie showings.

In addition to the Washington showings, “The Way We Get By” is playing at the Bangor Mall Cinemas through Oct. 1. Show times are 12:40 p.m. and 6:20 p.m.
