The Land Use Regulation Commission is expected this week to approve Plum Creek Timber Co.’s plan to rezone tens of thousands of acres around Moosehead Lake, enabling the company to develop nearly 1,000 house lots and two large resorts. The plan would also preserve about 400,000 acres of forestland, the second largest conservation deal in U.S. history. Should LURC approve the plan? Should there be conditions? Less development? More conservation? Or vice versa? Will the development bring needed jobs to the Greenville area? Or will it spoil the scenic landscape that brings visitors there now?
