Maine firefighter acquitted on abuse charges

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A jury has found a 42-year-old Maine firefighter not guilty of sexually abusing a teenage girl who participated in a youth firefighter program.

Craig Rawnsley was a member of the Portland and Cumberland fire departments when he was arrested last October on charges involving two girls. The first case involved a girl, now 17, who testified in Cumberland County Superior Court that she and Rawnsley had sex in his home and in two fire stations.

Charges involving the other girl are still pending.

Police said the two girls participated in Cumberland’s Fire Explorers program, which provides training for people between ages 14 and 21. Rawnsley claimed the girls fabricated the story.
