Baldacci: Regional cooperation works

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci says Maine should not stand alone when it comes to meeting challenges in energy and other issues.

In his weekly radio address, Baldacci said Maine and its neighbors in New England and the eastern Canada have all been fighting the effects of the international recession. But he said other challenges lie ahead, such as becoming energy self-sufficient, planning for a pandemic and climate change.

Many of these issues were on the table when the New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers met last this past week in New Brunswick. Baldacci, who co-chaired the event, said they should all work together on those and other issues.

Baldacci said the strengths of the New England states and eastern Canadian provinces far outweigh their differences.
