STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine — One man died and another was injured in a head-on collision Thursday evening involving a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer on Route 1 in Stockton Springs.
A 1998 Ford F-150 driven by Chadwick R. Sage, 32, was headed north when it crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 1996 Freightliner commercial truck driven by Richard L. Turner, 45, of Thomaston.
Sage, who was from Portland but was living recently in Prospect, died at the scene, according to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department.
Turner’s vehicle, which was hauling a full load of lobsters, rolled over and burst into flames. He climbed from the burning wreckage and was taken by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital. The extent of his injuries was unclear Friday but they were not considered life threatening.
Sheriff’s deputies on Friday were still investigating the accident, which occurred near the intersection of Route 1 and Route 1A and shut down the highway for several hours. Fuel spilled from both vehicles, prompting officials from the state Transportation and Environmental Protection departments to respond.
The lobsters from Turner’s truck were removed shortly after the wreck.
