ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Bar Harbor hotelier who has aggressively expanded the number of properties in his portfolio over the past two years has added another Ellsworth hotel to his list.

Records at City Hall and the Hancock County Registry of Deeds indicate that a firm called Ellsworth CI LLC purchased the Comfort Inn on High Street from Supertel LP of Norfolk, Neb., on Aug. 13.

David J. Witham, 69, is the registered agent of Ellsworth CI LLC, according to the state’s online corporations database. Information on Ellsworth’s assessing database indicate that the 1.7-acre High Street property has an assessed value of more than $2.4 million. On its Web site, Comfort Inn lists the property as having 63 rooms.

In separate purchases earlier this year, Witham acquired the unfinished Hampton Inn on High Street, the White Birches Motel on Route 1 in Hancock, and the Best Western motel, Aurora Inn and Quality Inn, all in Bar Harbor. Construction of the 86-room Hampton Inn is expected to be complete next spring.

Last year, he acquired the former Atlantic Oakes hotel in Bar Harbor from the Cough family and re-named it the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel.

Other properties owned by Witham or his family include the Bar Harbor Inn, Bar Harbor Grand Hotel, and Acadia Inn, all of which are in Bar Harbor. All 10 properties in the three Hancock County towns are estimated to have more than 950 rooms and a total assessed value of more than $40 million.
