Two arrested in connection to Milford assault

BANGOR, Maine — Two men accused of beating a Milford woman and a Greenbush man with a baseball bat Sunday at a home on French Settlement Road in Milford face felony assault charges.

Scott Coogan, 24, of Brewer and Robert LaCroix, 22, of Waterville both were charged with aggravated assault, a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000. Bail was set for both suspects during their initial appearances Wednesday in 3rd District Court in Bangor.

As of Wednesday evening, both men remained at Penobscot County Jail, unable to make bail of $7,500 cash each, a jail official confirmed.

According to police reports, the two suspects were among a group of five or six men who turned up Monday at the home, where Coogan had gone earlier that day purportedly to retrieve some of his belongings from a Milford woman with whom he has a daughter.

The woman was not home at the time and her mother refused to give Coogan the items he was seeking, saying she did not know what belonged to Coogan and what belonged to her daughter, according to police reports.

Coogan allegedly returned later and entered the home, along with LaCroix and up to four other men. On Coogan’s order, the men began assaulting the woman, striking her with a baseball bat. When the woman’s friend tried to intervene, the group turned the bat on him, beating him badly enough that he required treatment at a Bangor hospital. No further information about the Greenbush man’s medical status was available Wednesday.

According to a detective and a deputy from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department, the six or so men involved were similar in appearance in that they had tattoos and wore white tank tops and baggy jeans.

Authorities are seeking as many as four other men in connection with the incident, which remains under investigation.
