East Machias man injured in car rollover

MACHIAS, Maine — Alcohol is being considered a factor in an accident Tuesday night that demolished an East Machias man’s 1996 Mustang convertible and sent him to the hospital with facial and back injuries.

Edward Gray, 42, apparently fell asleep at the wheel shortly after 7 p.m. on Route 9 in Township 31, east of Route 192, according to Maine State Trooper Chris Smith.

Smith said Gray was eastbound when he fell asleep, allowing his vehicle to drift into the oncoming lane, then rode for a considerable distance in the ditch, before the vehicle rolled over onto its roof.

He was not wearing a seat belt, Smith said. The officer said a passing motorist pulled Gray from the vehicle.

Alexander First Responders and Down East Ambulance responded to the accident call, as well as Smith, Trooper Kim Sawyer and Machias police Officer Ryan Allen.

“The accident remains under investigation,” Smith said, “but alcohol is considered a factor.”
