NORTH BERWICK, Maine — Officials say a North Berwick police officer suffered serious injuries when his car went out of control and flipped onto its roof while he was pursuing a pickup truck.

Police Chief Stephen Peasley told Foster’s Daily Democrat that the officer was conducting a traffic stop on Route 4 when he was almost hit by the pickup truck about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Peasley said the officer pursued the truck, but ended up flipping his cruiser. Firefighters had to remove the vehicle’s front door so the officer could get out.

Peasley said the officer, who was not named, was taken to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H., with head injuries. The accident is under investigation.

Peasley said the pickup truck driver was later stopped by Sanford police and arrested for operating under the influence.
