Rumford paper machine shutdown could affect 100 jobs

RUMFORD, Maine — About 100 jobs at the NewPage Corp. paper mill in Rumford could be lost while one of the mill’s paper production machines is shut down.

The Sun Journal of Lewiston says the No. 10 machine at the mill will be shut down “temporarily, indefinitely” as of Sept. 18.

But mill spokeswoman Janet Hall says the No. 15 machine, which has been running five days a week, will resume its seven-day-a-week schedule.

Union President Matt Bean says 100 positions, but not necessarily 100 people, would be affected by the No. 10 shutdown.

Hall says the decisions are driven by the market.

She says that when the economy rebounds the No. 10 machine will be restarted.
