BROWNVILLE, Maine — A hobo from California who police say was planning to jump onto a train in Brownville was charged Thursday with trespassing on railroad property.

Brian Kircher, 28, of Greenwood, Calif., was removed from railroad property at about 12:30 p.m. and summoned to appear in 13th District Court in Dover-Foxcroft on Nov. 16.

Brownville Police Chief Nick Clukey said a caller reported that a transient was in the railroad yard. When Clukey arrived, he said he found Kircher next to the tracks and heard a noise in nearby woods. Officer Chad Perkins, who also responded to the call, spotted three other men in a wooded section, but they took off on foot, Clukey said. Brownville police were assisted in a search for the men by Milo police and the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department. The men were never found.

Kircher told Clukey that he had hitchhiked to Brownville and was waiting for a ride to Millinocket.

Clukey said trespassing on railroad tracks is a crime and is dangerous.

In an unrelated case, Brownville police said they arrested a Bangor man on Tuesday after he failed to stop at a stop sign and found marijuana in his vehicle.

Rockey Smith, 18, was charged with operating after suspension, possession of scheduled drugs and unlawful furnishing of scheduled drugs. His initial court appearance is set for Nov. 16 in 13th District Court in Dover-Foxcroft.

Clukey said further charges might be lodged because the vehicle displayed a stolen inspection sticker. Smith’s vehicle was impounded.
