Les Merrill, owner of Merrill Farm, chops corn for his cows in a Levant field Wednesday afternoon. “We are low on hay this year and the owner of Rowell’s Fresh Veggies let us cut the corn that he has finished harvesting for his vegetable stands. I’m lucky that my friend [Joseph Senter] had the time to drive the truck for me,” he said. Like most Maine farmers, Merrill is trying to put up as much feed for his animals as he can after the record amount of rain this summer. “Normally this time of year we would be busy doing other stuff and we are still cutting hay,” he added.
