GARDINER, Maine — A fire swept through an abandoned mill in the central Maine town of Gardiner, destroying about half of the structure.

Officials say the blaze broke out at around 3 a.m. at the old mill on Water Street. Police say the building has been abandoned for about 10 years.

WGME-TV says investigators with the state fire marshal’s office are on scene, but they may not be able to enter the building’s remains until Thursday.

The fire was reminiscent of a recent blaze in Lewiston that destroyed the historic Cowan Mill, a textile mill that had been vacant for some time.
