Is a milder winter in store for Maine?

The Lewiston-based Farmer’s Almanac is predicting a very cold winter for 2009-2010, with the caveat that the Northeast will be milder than the nation’s mid-section (the Rocky Mountains to the Appalachians). The National Weather Service predicts a milder winter

than normal for the Northeast. Who do you believe, and why? Is such long-term prediction possible?
