OLD TOWN, Maine — A section of Stillwater Avenue was shut down Sunday night as emergency crews responded to a fire in a three-unit apartment building.
Lt. Michael Hildreth of the Old Town Fire Department said no one was home at the time the blaze was reported by a passer-by at about 9:30 p.m. When fire crews arrived at the scene, he said, “Fire was pushing out the back of the first floor.”
Firefighters attacked the blaze from the front of the building, Hildreth said, adding that the fire spread quickly through empty spaces between walls in the old building.
Hildreth said one pet cat was found dead in the structure. “We’ve heard there were two here,” he said.
Damage to the property was extensive. The building is located at 1051 Stillwater Ave. The name of the property owner was not immediately available. The cause of the fire was unknown but will be investigated, Hildreth said.
Fire and rescue units from Old Town, Orono and Milford went to the scene. Stillwater Avenue was closed to through traffic from College Avenue to Spring Street, but Hildreth said he expected at least one lane would be open by midnight.
