SHIRLEY, Maine — A Hermon man who police said was driving too fast on a dirt road died Sunday when he lost control of his truck on a curve, the truck struck a rock and then rolled over several times.

Patrick Burpee, 27, reportedly died instantly in the 3:15 p.m. crash on the Shirley side of Blanchard Road, according to Investigator Dave Wilson of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.

Two passengers in the late-model Ford F150 — Shawn Plante, 28, and Cote Rocky, 26 — were taken by ambulance to C.A. Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where they were treated for cuts and bruises and were later released. One of the passengers is reportedly from the Etna area and the other from out of state, Wilson said Sunday night.

Wilson said the trio had been in the Blanchard area fishing and swimming before the accident occurred.

“Speed and alcohol were certainly a factor in the accident,” Wilson said. He said Burpee apparently lost control of his vehicle on a curve and then overcorrected as the vehicle approached a hill, striking a rock and rolling over several times.

Investigator Jamie Kane of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department reconstructed the accident.

None of the occupants of the vehicle was wearing a seat belt, Wilson said.

Burpee’s body was taken to Crosby and Neal Funeral Home in Newport.

Monson, Shirley and Greenville firefighters assisted the investigators at the scene.
