PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — With all of the facilities open to the public, officials at The Aroostook Medical Center are ready to officially introduce the new family health care center and medical mall to residents of the city and surrounding communities.

Hospital officials announced Friday that the public is invited to a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony at North Street Healthcare on Friday, Aug. 28. Attendees will be able to tour the 50,000-square-foot building, meet the providers and staff, and learn how the project affects local health care.

North Street Healthcare is located in the building formerly occupied by Smythe’s IGA Plus on North Street. The building offers walk-in care, adult primary care, pediatrics, dialysis, nephrology, patient billing and physical therapy services. Laboratory service is located on-site. Aroostook Pediatrics was the first office to open at the health care mall in early June. Before it opened, TAMC had Aroostook Pediatrics offices in Presque Isle and Caribou, but the new mall has combined both offices under one roof.

Two medical practices, Aroostook Family Practice and Presque Isle Health Center, also have joined forces at the new mall to form Family Practice and Internal Medicine.

Walk-In Care, a clinic to treat minor medical concerns, also opened on North Street to provide easy access to medical care for patients who otherwise would use the emergency room. No appointment is necessary, and costs are comparable to a primary care office visit for most people.

Officials at TAMC have been pushing for the opening of the new health care mall for some time.

Hospital officials outlined the plan for the North Street site last year after they worked with an engineering and architectural firm to assess TAMC’s ability to meet the needs of the community.

Hospital officials said planners found a growing need for TAMC to provide outpatient services. The hospital’s board then approved a plan to open the outpatient services center.

Benefits of the new center include simplified scheduling, more convenient parking and the availability of walk-in care during evening and weekend hours.

The hospital’s patient billing department, County Dialysis Center, and County Physical Therapy have occupied the plaza for some time and remain in their current spaces. Pat’s Pizza, a longtime tenant at North Street, also has remained.

No jobs have been cut as a result of the changes, and TAMC officials have said that more people eventually will be hired to staff the mall as the patient load grows.

During the grand opening, social time with refreshments will begin at 4 p.m., and a brief ceremony will take place at 4:30 p.m. Tours will be offered beginning at 5 p.m. Areas open to tours will include Aroostook Pediatrics, Family Practice & Internal Medicine, and Nephrology Services.
