Five members of the Bangor Daily News staff have been recognized for their work by the New England Associated Press News Executives Association, which announced its annual awards this week.

Honored in the Class I category of newspapers, which includes the largest publications in the six New England states, were:
Photographer Kate Collins — second place in General News Photography for her photo of family members of murder victim Cheryl Murdoch reacting to a guilty verdict in the trial of Shannon Atwood in Skowhegan in July 2008; third place in Photo Illustration for a LifeStyle layout of women’s fashions in February of 2009; third place in Deadline News for her shot of a library fire on Swans Island in July 2008.
Photographer Kevin Bennett — second place in the Portrait/Profile category for his shot of cancer patient Sonya Barclay and her daughter, Madyson, in May 2008; third place in the Feature category for his photo of a Bangor family shoveling snow together in December, 2008.
Graphics designer Eric Zelz and Copy Editor Joel Crabtree — second place in the Page One Design category for their work on the swearing-in of President Barack Obama in January 2009.
Sports columnist John Holyoke — third place in the Enterprise writing category for his story in November 2008 on the legacy of a fatal hunting accident in Hermon 20 years later.
