Fallen Marine from Maine known as ‘holy man’

The Associated Press

NEW PORTLAND, Maine — A Marine killed in Afghanistan wanted to help others and was an active member of the youth group at his church back home in Maine.

A close friend says 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Joshua M. Bernard, of New Portland, Maine, was known as “The Holy Man” to fellow Marines because of his faith. Bernard was a rifleman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay.

The defense department says Bernard died Friday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, where thousands of Marines are working to secure parts of the Taliban stronghold.

Michael Grooms told the Kennebec Journal that Bernard was home-schooled before enlisting in the Marines in November 2006. Bernard was deployed to Iraq in January 2008.
